Bar Code Scanners

Setup | Programming Scanners | General Care and Maintenance

Setup

Here are a few notes about setup:
1. Scanners do not come ready to use out of the box, they are all programmed differently, you will probably have to program the scanner you are using

2. After programming, the computer will think the scanner is a keyboard, and therefore you do not need a software driver for it
3. After plugging in your scanner, if it doesn't light up, you may not have enough power. Try plugging the scanner directly into the computer. Sometimes if you are too far away from you computer, or you have plugged the scanner into a hub or splitter, there is not enough power for the scanner. External adapters can be used to boost the signal, are available from us, or sometimes in your local electronic store (see the manual that came with the scanner for power specs)

Programming Scanners

Programming instructions can be found in the manual that came with your scanner. There are four basic things that Sixth Sense recommends your scanner should be doing:
1. Be set to Keyboard simulation - the scanner emulates a keyboard, so the computer just thinks it has an extra keyboard
2. Do not scan in the Numbering System Digit (see picture)
3. Do not scan in the Check Digit (see picture)
4. Add an "Enter" key after the scan - after scanning a PLU the scanner will send an "Enter" key, just the same the "Enter" key on your keyboard, this will save you the trouble if hitting "Enter" when you are scanning in items for use.
Note: Scanners have a different names for the "Enter" key. It could be a LF (Line Feed), a CR (Carriage Return) or both LFCR or CRLF.

General Care and Maintenance

Here are a couple of suggestions to help bar code scanners live longer:
1. Try to keep the scanner clean and dust free
2. Try not to drop the scanner, if you have a stand, make sure it is secure, if you don't secure the scanner as best as possible.
